Pilling – A Tough Pill To Swallow

Why it happens and what you can do to fix it.

Pilling happens. From the most expensive fabrics to the bargain bins, pilling is an eventuality. It can be a tough pill to swallow when it happens to your brand new sofa or favourite sweater. Don’t fret though, there is something you can do to ensure the longevity and looks of your fabrics without breaking the bank.

Why Does Pilling Happen?

Pills form when short fibers in a material come loose, get tangled, and form tiny balls of yarn at the end of the fibre. The main cause of pilling is friction, which occurs most often during use and wear.

What Fabrics Are Prone To Pilling?

Fibers such as wool, cotton, polyester, nylon and acrylic have a tendency to pill the most, but wool pilling diminishes over time as it’s a natural fiber and they will eventually wear off. Synthetic textiles are a more serious problem as they hold onto the pills preventing them from falling off. This can lead to unsightly little balls that make your furniture and clothes look less than brand new.

3 Ways To Prevent Pilling

Excessive wear can cause pilling, not only on your clothing but your upholstered furniture as well. Flip and rotate your cushions frequently if they are removable.

Don’t cause friction or keep it to a minimum. By using a throw blanket, toss pillows, slippers etc, you may inadvertently be causing pilling. Keep your use of blankets on top of you instead of underneath. If you have pets this may be hard to do as we like to use blankets to keep our furniture from ending up with hair, dirt, scratches and drool from our beloved furry babies. Tuck in the blanket tightly so the friction is kept to a minimum.

Don’t rub stains. Many times your first reaction upon finding a stain is to rub at it, don’t! Blotting is best, especially if you’re not sure if your fabric is prone to pilling.

If all else fails and you have those unsightly little pills still forming and want to get rid of them once an fo all then invest in a pill shaver. Yes, that’s right, a pill shaver. This handy tool is a must have for everyone. Not only will it save you hundreds in clothing costs but thousands in furniture costs over the years. I have saved many a sofa from landfill as well as clothing by simply de-pilling using a pill shaver. They are relatively inexpensive and you can order one online and get it shipped directly to your door! How convenient is that!! What to look for when purchasing a pill shaver is one that has an A/C adapter so it doesn’t require batteries to operate. Or invest in rechargeable batteries to keep regular battery usage to a minimum and out of landfill.

It’s amazing the difference a little de-pilling will do for your clothing and your furniture. The more we take care of what we have the less that will end up in our landfills.

Happy Sitting, Hope
