For many people (myself included) the winter months make it more difficult to focus and keep happiness levels high, our mood tends to drop along with the temperatures. The shorter days, less sunlight, and spending extra hours inside can be the recipe for the winter blues. I absolutely appreciate the beauty of the first snowfall and the sun sparkling through the ice on the trees, but it doesn’t take long for me to start yearning for Spring.
Essential oils are a wonderful way to relieve the winter blues symptoms. Certain oils are uplifting and enhance your mood as they positively stimulate your brain’s limbic system, which is the part of your brain that controls emotions. Try my favourite winter blend –
4 Drops of organic Bergamot essential oil
3 Drops of pure Frankincense essential oil
3 Drops of organic Orange essential oil
2 Drops of organic Peppermint essential oil
You can diffuse the blend into the air or make into rollerballs with a carrier oil or apply the oil blends topically to the balls of your feet and skin reaching to the juncture of your toes, under your jawbones and on the back of your neck.
- 1% dilution is 3 drops of EO per tablespoon of carrier oil – 1% of 300 drops is 3
This percentage is recommended for those children over the age of 6, pregnant women, elderly adults, people with a sensitive skin type – the dilution is recommended when using essential oils topically, for massage or in lotions and rubs.
- 2% dilution is 6 drops of EO per tablespoon of carrier oil – 2% of 300 drops is 6
This is ideal for most normal adults, for use in daily aromatherapy or topical application.
- 3% dilution is 9 drops of EO per tablespoon of carrier oil – 3% of 300 drops is 9
