Whenever I see a picture of serene & uncluttered bedroom which is beautifully appointed with creature comforts, I always wonder to my self – how long did it take to make this space come together?

Don’t Make Spontaneous Purchases

I know this is a hard one, but if you want your bedroom to intentionally be your own space, then it’s important to really deliberate on your purchases. Don’t go with trends, find your own style & what you like and what fits in your life. While a very pale cream rug can look beautiful but if you have dogs, children and a husband that like to wear his outside shoes into the bedroom – how long is your carpet going to look pristine and are you prepared for the upkeep. Take your time, “do I really, really love this or in 12 months am I going to want something else?”.

Be Prepared And Define Your Style

Build yourself a small folder with your wishlist, include inspiration photographs of rooms that you like, have pictures of the items you are searching in the styles you like, fabric swatches of your current furnishings & drapery that you are wanting tone to and paint chart colours. Know what serenity means to you, is it complete blockout drapes or is it sheer billowy curtains that allow all the light in? Traditional, Scandi or French Provencial chic?  And lastly make a budget, sign up for sale alerts from stores that you which to purchase high ticket items from & don’t forget the discount factory outlets for Restoration Hardware, Laura Ashley or Au Lit Fine Linens.

Do Your Research

See a picture of a beautiful bed or drapes in a magazine that you just love – go to the resource page and do your homework. Many designers have pieces customized to suit the the particular rooms thet are working with. This doesn’t have to cost a fortune, many stores allow you to choose the design & fabric of furniture pieces even adding nail heads to upholstery. Having a piece built to your exact specifications may cost more, but you have a piece that will last & you won’t want to replace it in a couple of years. Find a local upholster that you can work with, research local furniture makers, drapery firms, furniture refinishers and fireplace restoration companies.

Don’t Rush The Process

Rooms and decorating don’t just come together from a single visit to one store and one huge purchase, it takes time. Cultivate your own chic look & don’t be afraid to express yourself, recover that old wingback chair with a fabulous upholstery fabric and add a custom foot stool. Spend some days visiting antique & vintage stores searching for unique pieces to make your room your own.
