Is your perfume safe? Do you know what’s actually in it? What’s the list of ingredients? Do you know what all those long words actually mean? Did you know that fragrance recipes are considered trade secrets so manufacturers are not required to disclose fragrance chemicals in the list of ingredients. Fragrance, Perfume or Scent for women is an intrinsic part to who we are, and for most of us a part of our daily routine of bathing and dressing.
So what’s the problem?
Fragrance can mean a cocktail of up to 3,000 different ingredients and most have NOT been tested for safety. Many of the unlisted ingredients are irritants and can trigger allergies – like runny nose, watery eyes, itching skin, migraines, and asthma symptoms. Perfumes/colognes can trigger an asthma attack in 3 out of every 4 people and in lab experiments, individual fragrance ingredients have been associated with cancer and neurotoxicity. Environment Canada has stated serious concern with the bioaccumulative effect of synthetic musks which are toxic to both aquatic life (they settle in the fatty tissues) and human health.
One ingredient – Phthalate, called diethyl phthalate (DEP) is shown to disrupt our hormones, including testosterone. Which is real concern for pregnant women as there’s evidence connecting phthalates to developmental disorders, especially among newborn boys. Other research has linked DEP to poor lung function and myriad sperm issues, from lower counts to reduced motility. It has also been linked to early puberty in girls, reduced sperm count in men and ssociated with obesity and insulin resistance in men. Health Canada notes evidence suggesting that exposure to phthalates may cause liver and kidney failure in young children when products containing phthalates are sucked or chewed for extended periods. While the DEP is listed as a Priority and Toxic Pollutant under the U.S. Clean Water Act, based on evidence that it can be toxic to wildlife and the environment.
